They went up early, but got caught from behind again as the Dirtbags gave up 8 unanswered runs to San Diego, losing 12-5. Jonathan Jones was one-for-two with an RBI single.  Matt Hauser picked up the win for San Diego as part of a staff day for the Toreros, while Jeff Lease, Long Beach State’s starter, dropped to 1-1.  The Dirtbags took the lead in the first inning when Tre Dennis, who reached on a walk, scored on a pair of errors.

San Diego threatened in the bottom of the first, loading the bases with one out. However, Lease was able to get Zach Walters to fly out to shallow right field. TJ Mittelstaedt recorded the out, and was then able to make the throw in time to catch Sean Nicol advancing to home for the double play.

Mittelstaedt singled to start the second inning, and would come around to score on an RBI single from Jones to add another run to the Long Beach State total.  San Diego answered in the second inning, putting two runs across on four singles to even the score. The Toreros would then take the lead in the third, as Victor Sanchez came around to score after a leadoff double.

The Toreros added two more runs in the fourth inning, and three more came across in the fifth, giving San Diego a commanding lead.  The Dirtbags would put a third run on the board in the sixth, taking advantage of two Torero errors, but San Diego would match that run and add three more in the bottom of the sixth.

Long Beach State mounted a small rally in the ninth, as Kip Masuda and Brennan Metzger both reached to start the inning. Masuda would come around to score on a balk, and Tre Dennis would score on a two-out single from Kyle Singer.

Long Beach State will host UNLV for three games starting on Friday night at Blair Field. First pitch for the series opener is scheduled for 6:30pm.
