With home-court advantage on their side, the Poly Jackrabbits fought valiantly but were swept in the first round by Esperanza, 25-18, 25-16, 25-19, ending their 2009 campaign with a record of 23-11. “It was a tough match for us,” said Poly coach Vuthy Cheav after the game. “We didn’t play like we did [in a recent match that gave them second place in the league] against Lakewood.”
Sophomore opposite hitter John LaRusch had a solid performance with 11 kills and 3 blocks, and freshman standout Joel McPherson had his block going, with six on the night, but ultimately Poly’s lack of a middle block was exposed by Esperanza.
“The kids had a great season,” said Cheav of his squad. “And we had a mix of some seniors and a lot of younger guys coming back—we played a tough team tonight and just came up short, but we came a long way this season.”
Congrats to the ‘Rabbits on a long season of hard work, and for another playoff appearance.
