First Round (Games Friday, Nov. 21 at 7:30pm)
LB Poly vs. Bishop Amat (at Vet’s)
Esperanza vs. San Clemente
Mission Viejo vs. Loyola
Lakewood @ Servite
Tesoro vs. Los Alamitos
LB Jordan @ Mater Dei
Fountain Valley vs. Orange Lutheran
Compton @ Sherman Oaks/Notre Dame
Commentary: First, the teams who should be a little sore at not making it are Edison, Crespi, and St. John Bosco, all of whom had good seasons. Granted, there’s not a lot of teams that should be bumped off of this list, but still–tough.
I’m surprised that Poly is the only Moore League with a home game–I mean, Jordan’s the number two seed from a league with four playoff teams, and they have to play on the road? I’m also a little surprised it’s Mater Dei/Jordan–those are the number two seeds from the best two leagues in the bracket. A tough task for Jordan, but maybe winnable, especially since their pass defense is their strength.
Lakewood/Servite is going to be a great game, and Compton got the short end of the stick with a road draw against Notre Dame, the number two seed in the whole bracket (behind Poly).
Check back throughout the week for our previews. NOTE: Ben Bolch of the LA Times recently wrote an article claiming the Moore League shouldn’t get four teams automatically in the playoffs. Come back tomorrow and I’ll tell you why he’s wrong.
For a preliminary conversation about the pairings, check out the first twelve minutes of this week’s episode of SportsNight, Long Beach’s sports talk radio show. Check back on Wednesday for a detailed conversation–it’s easy to use our player, just hit play!
