After a warmup against ML King in the second round (and 11-1 after three quarters definitely qualifies as a warmup), the water starts to get choppy for the CIF Division 2 no. 3 Wilson Bruins, who travel to Fullerton JC at noon on Saturday to take on the Servite Friars in the quarterfinals. If they can get a win, they’ll face no. 2 JSerra in the semifinals (provided Serra isn’t upset by El Modina).
The positives for Wilson: they’re relatively healthy, having not sustained injuries in the game against King, and having Michael LaBounty back in the pool. Servite has beaten some teams this year, but haven’t been a CIF top ten team for the last few weeks—if Wilson executes their gameplan as well as they did against King, they should end up where they’re supposed to, with the other top four teams in CIF.
Defensively, they need Noah LeBeau to do what he’s done all year and keep the net clean—LeBeau really showed off his ability to come out of the goal to scoop the ball up against King. In those instances, he has the potential to become another physical force on that Wilson D.
Offensively, the goal-scorers have been showing up lately, and Tyler Kennedy, Rick Dilday, LaBounty, and Will Durnin will need to continue their postseason production. If they do, this won’t be the last Wilson match we get to cover this season.
