On the same campus as the Millikan baseball team was completing its first-round defensive marvel, the Wilson boys’ volleyball team was putting the finishing touches on one of their own, in a 25-14, 25-20, 25-18 win over Millikan. The victory means the Bruins are 5-0 at the conclusion of the first round of league play, and still haven’t given up a set in league this season. The win comes just a day after CIF released their boys’ volleyball poll for the week, where the Bruins come in at fourth place, the highest ranking the school has ever received; Wilson is also ranked fourteenth nationally by ESPN.
It was a great team effort by the Bruins as Cory Leckie had 23 assists (along with three kills and an ace) and Louie Frost also had 23 assists (with one kill and one ace). Other leaders were Mike Wilder, with nine kills, and assist and a dig; Jack Brizendine with 7 kills and an ace, Jacob MacRae with five kills three blocks and an ace; Zack Reed with 8 kills and one block; Spencer Nelson with 6 kills and 2 blocks; and Brandon Fuimaono with 17 digs. Wilson is 16-5 overall, coming off a third-place finish at the Santa Barbara Tournament of Champions last weekend.
Head coach Susan Pescar was very pleased with her team’s “team-like performance”. She bestowed black jerseys on the varsity squad after the match was finished.
