Playing host to the 8-0-1 Millikan Rams, the 0-8-1 Poly Jackrabbits could have found it very easy to pack it in before the game even began. Even after they got a score, an Eddie Ortega header to the far post from a Chris Viray cross in the 56th minute, it would have been understandable if they’d been unconfident—they were leading the Rams 1-0 the last time they played, a game Poly lost. But with a sound defensive strategy, and three saves by goalie Ruben Rangel, the ‘Rabbits held on for the 1-0 win.
The Jackrabbits are still the only team in the league to score on Millikan besides Compton, and handed the Rams their first league loss this season. “We always had nine to ten guys behind the ball,” said Poly coach Efren Garcia of his team’s collapsed defensive strategy.
“We played in their 18-yard box the whole second half but couldn’t ever put it in,” said Millikan’s coach, Rod Petkovic, who noted it was the collapsed formation of the ‘Rabbits that kept things too clogged for the Rams to score. “I’m hoping the loss will help break up the monotony, and help us focus on next week.”
Next week the Rams are visiting the second-place Wilson Bruins, while the ‘Rabbits will host Lakewood.
