Cabrillo was able to run their record to 4-0- 1 with a hard fought victory in Palm Springs against a previously undefeated La Quinta team, 1-0. The game was played at a very high pace with both teams playing high-pressure defense. The home team was able to get 3 shots in the first half to the Jaguars’ 5. Only one shot from each team looked like it might find the back of the net, when Wilfredo Mejia blasted a volley over the bar in minute 35. Each team had shots blocked by hard charging defenders.
The second half was dominated by Cabrillo as their fitness began to wear down the Skyhawks of La Quinta. In minute 21 Fernando Arroyo pressured a La Quinta defender in to losing possession on the left wing and drove hard with the ball to the endline. His hard cross across the face of the goal on the ground was just missed by 2 defenders and Cabrillo’s Mejia but Geovanni Cazzal charged in from outside the 18 yard box to fire home for the lone goal. The game was tense for the Jaguars in the last 15 minutes with the Skyhawks launching long balls into the box but GK Edgar Martinez and the CHS defense was up to the challenge. This was the 3rd shutout in 5 games. Cabrillo has now outscored opponents 14-3 in their first five games.
