Cabrillo got up early on Artesia when Wilfredo Mejia outjumped the Artesia keeper, Jose Sanchez, and put a loose ball in the net just fifteen minutes in. Mejia beat a defender on the right side and crossed to Giovanni Cazzal for a score from the top left corner of the box to make it 2-0, the score Cabrillo went on to win by.
Jags keeper Edgar Marinez stuffed the lone chance for Artesia at the 39-minute mark with a sliding save after an Artesia forward broke through the line.
Artesia controlled possession in the second half, but strong counter play gave Cabrillo the better chances. Armando Padilla almost scored the icer for the Jags in minute 70, but a save by Artesia’s keeper denied him. It was a hard-fought match with 31 fouls called and 2 yellows issued, but the Jags fought through it to take 12 shots, with seven on frame, while Artesia was held to just six shots and two on target. Oscar Enriquez’s strong play as center-back helped the Jags tremendously; Cabrillo will next play Lawndale on the Jags’ home field.
