10:00 | Due to unfortunate scheduling errors and conflicts, Beach Hockey has had to cancel games for the weekend of 1/28 – 1/30.  The 49ers return to action at home on Thursday Feb. 4 at 9pm against our NorCal rivals the San Jose State Spartans. Back in October, the 49ers defeated the Spartans 3-2 in Lakewood. Also, the game that was scheduled at Loyola Marymount on Thursday Feb. 11 has been moved to SATURDAY FEB. 13 @ 5pm. The location has also been changed to Culver Ice Arena.

We are proud to report about three former 49ers that are overseas playing/coaching professionally. Former Head Coach John Cacciatore is in his second season with the Varese Killer Bees in Northern Italy. Last year his team went undefeated on their way to a championship and this year was shaping up the same way. The Bees have an impressive 136 goals for and only 27 goals against in 16 games for a record of 15-0-1.

Brian Horwitz, a 49er standout that was a contender for the ACHA league lead in points a few seasons ago, is the Bee’s leading scorer with 34 goals and 9 assists. Cacciatore also brought goaltender Frank Mitrano to Italy and Frank was playing marvelously until an opponent hit Frank from behind breaking Mitrano’s collar bone. The cheap shot has left the Bee’s championship chances in peril with Mitrano out of commission for a couple of months.

Meanwhile, some local 49er alumni have created their own adult league team based out of the East/West Ice Palace in Artesia. You can follow the “Thirsty Niners” on their Facebook group page under the same name.

The 49ers’ annual alumni game is slated for Saturday, April 3 at the Staples Center. The 49ers of Now face the 49ers of Yesteryear at 3pm, then the Kings and Ducks fight at 7:30pm. Tickets are in short supply @ $35/each (300lvl), so email the team at 49ericehockey@gmail.com.
