Well, this was cool news to get on a Wednesday afternoon—former Long Beach State Dirtbag Cesar Ramos has been called up to the majors by the San Diego Padres.  That makes Ramos the 11th Dirtbag to go to the show this season.

Ramos, who was a first-round pick of the San Diego Padres in the 2005 draft class, becomes the third Long Beach State player from that draft to play in the major leagues, joining Troy Tulowitzki (Colorado Rockies) and Marco Estrada (Washington Nationals).

With three players in “the show,” the 2005 class is tied for the most Dirtbags to reach the highest level of professional baseball, joining the 2002 class with Jeremy Reed, Paul McAnulty and Chris Demaria and the 2004 class, featuring Jered Weaver, Jason Vargas and John Bowker.

The 34th former Long Beach State baseball player to reach the major leagues, Ramos has a 4-6 record with a 4.33 ERA in 14 starts with AAA Portland of the Pacific Coast League in 2009.

Also called up with the September roster expansion was Estrada of the Washington Nationals. Estrada played in 11 games for the Nationals last year, pitching 12.2 innings.
