The Long Beach State women’s volleyball team cruised to a three-set victory over Virginia Commonwealth this afternoon in the first game of a very busy weekend for the 49ers. They’ll play another game at Moby Arena tonight in Fort Collins, Colorado before traveling to Denver and playing two more this weekend.
The 25-15, 25-20, 25-19 victory for the 49ers (7-2) was a great way to start off the weekend, especially with their floor general joining them again. Junior setter Ashley Lee has been battling a broken finger since the preseason and has had to miss several games, and though freshman Ashley Vazquez did an admirable job of running the intricate offense in Lee’s absence, the All-Conference player came ready to the mountains and brought an avalanche of assists with her.
Lee notched an astonishing 45 dimes in the three-game match and added six kills and four digs just for fun. She was joined by the 15 kills of Caitlin Ledoux, 12 of freshman Haleigh Hampton and 7 of Michelle Osunbor to lead the way for Long Beach State. All four players mentioned hit over .400 for the match. Meanwhile, high-flying sophomore Janisa Johnson continued her emergence this season with 16 kills and 11 digs for yet another double-double.
While the victory over VCU came quickly, tonight’s contest with Colorado State (9-1) figures to be a battle. The Rams are riding a four-game winning streak in which they’ve outscored their opponents 12-2. This season they’ve also hit an impressive .378 as a team.
The good news for Long Beach State is that the Rams had trouble last night with the same VCU team that was swept by Long Beach today. Foreshadowing or false promise? Keep it locked on LBPOSTSports.com and we’ll let you know if the 49ers are able to pull off the huge victory tonight.
