It’s been a frustrating weekend for Long Beach State fans, with Women’s Volleyball struggling to win its first two games opening league play. But the school’s other powerhouse, the women’s soccer team, had at least given us good news, beating Arizona. Then the bad news—they lost to Arizona State, by a score of 1-0 (which isn’t a surprise, since all of the team’s losses have been 1-0). Arizona State’s Karin Volpe took a pass from Jill Shoquist and after getting past a defender fired it to the right of goalkeeper Liz Ramos for the deciding score on a sweltering day with temperatures near 100 degrees.
It was the 49ers’ third loss, an evenly played contest that saw LBSU take nine shots, and the Sun Devils take eight. The ASU defense made five saves, with goalkeeper Briana Silvestri making three saves and her defenders stopping the other two.
It was ASU’s second 1-0 victory of the weekend against the Big West, as the Sun Devils defeated UC Santa Barbara 1-0 on Friday night.
The 49ers are next in action when they begin conference play starting on Friday, hosting UC Davis at George Allen Field. LBSU was picked to finished second in the Big West by a single point to the Gauchos.
