The Long Beach Press-Telegram’s Dave Werstine is reporting that on Tuesday the Lakewood High football team forfeited all four of its victories as “a corrective measure” for unknowingly playing an ineligible player.

Lakewood officials did not name the player, and told Werstine the mistake was of a clerical nature.  The games against Crenshaw, Peninsula, Mayfair and Verbum Dei will now stand as loses, and the Lacers will go into Friday’s game against Poly, 0-4.  The Lancers will also hand over the Milk Bucket to Mayfair, despite their 24-7 win two weeks ago.

Co-Principal at Lakewood, Charles Acosta, told Werstine, “We want to do the right thing.  We don’t want to sacrifice our integrity, as painful as it might be.”  Head coach Thadd MacNeal added that he felt “embarrassed.”  MacNeal also told Werstine that the player in question can improve his grades by the next grading period in three weeks, and rejoin the team.
