On Saturday the 49ers traveled to Santa Barbara to face the No. 7 Gauchos at their campus pool, where UCSB is undefeated this season. Senior Ash Blythen led the 49er charge with 4 goals, backed by Jeff Greenwood and Jake Kinne with 3 apiece, but a last-second Gaucho goal in the fourth period forced a double overtime, and the home squad walked away with a 13-12 victory.

Long Beach State (11-14, 0-5) faced an early deficit when UC Santa Barbara (14-8, 3-2) found themselves with a 3-1 advantage in the early minutes of the first period. But the 49ers battled back, with help from two goals from Jeff Greenwood to take a 4-3 lead after the first.  The squads swapped goals in the second period, and Greenwood’s third goal of the game with :43 seconds left in the half put the Beach up 7-6 after a half.

UCSB outscored Long Beach State 3-2 in the third period, and the game was tied going into the final quarter of play. Ash Blythen stepped up early in the fourth for the 49ers with two quick power-play goals to put the Beach ahead once again. When UCSB responded with two goals of their own, Blythen pulled some more magic out of his hat for a third power-play goal of the period. The Gauchos called a timeout with :19 seconds left to play, and quickly earned a 6-on-5 advantage after an LBSU ejection. With only :04 seconds left in the game, Gaucho Jessee Tootell scored to take the two teams into overtime.

Both squads failed to score in the first three-minute overtime, and the score remained 12-12 heading into the second. Late in the overtime period, UCSB was able to take advantage of another Long Beach State ejection, and Milos Gollic scored his seventh goal of the game to steal the 13-12 victory away from the 49ers.

After only two games in the past two weeks, Long Beach State faces a busy schedule next weekeend, hosting Loyola Marymount on Thursday at 7 p.m., Cal on Saturday at 12:00 p.m. and Pacific on Sunday afternoon at 12:00 p.m.
