Ranked 3rd and 5th in the state, respectively, the LBCC men’s and women’s water polo teams were both expected to perform well at this weekend’s South Coast Conference tournament, held at Pasadena City College.  Both teams lived up to expectations.

After blasting low-ranked Chaffey in the first round on Thursday, by a score of 23-6, the Vikings advanced to the conference title match, where they faced Mt. SAC.  The teams had played recently, in the final SCC game of the regular season, the Vikings had won 10-8 to finish the season undefeated in conference play.  The result flipped on Saturday, though, as Mt. SAC got their revenge, defeating Chris Oeding’s Vikings by a score of 9-7, giving Mt. SAC the conference title and the Vikings the silver.

The women’s team also finished at the top of the standings in conference play, and were expected to make a big splash in the tournament.  Their only loss of the regular season was against the Cerritos Falcons, ranked number two in the state, by a score of 13-7.  It was a much tighter contest but the Vikes fell to the Falcons 8-7 in the conference final yesterday, and they also took second.

We’ll await word on whether either team will qualify for the state tournament, the announcement should come soon.
