Two Big West Coach of the Year awards, two College World Series trips, 14 NCAA appearances…And he cooks? Well, that’s what we’ll find out this Saturday when Mike Weathers joins eight SoCal baseball coaches at ESPN Zone in Anaheim for the first-ever NCAA Baseball Coach Cook-Off.
It’s going to be an Iron Chef-style contest with USC’s Chad Kreuter, Cal State Fullerton’s Dave Serrano, CSUN’s Stephen Rousey, LMU’s Jason Gill, Pepperdine’s Steve Rodriguez, UC Irvine’s Mike Gillespie, USD’s Rich Hill and UC Santa Barbara’s Bob Brontsema.
Coaches will team with an ESPN Zone chef to prepare an entrée in a 20-minute time period and present their creations to a panel of judges. The dishes will be graded on presentation, creativity and taste. Along with the always-important bragging rights, coaches will be vying for top honors in all three categories, as well as “Top Chef” billing for the highest overall score.
We’re pretty desperate for baseball season around here, so we’ll bring you full coverage of the event, as well as a not-so-professional opinion of how Weathers stacks up as a coach. If you’re interested in attending, the Cook-Off will start this Saturday at 8:45am, at the ESPN Zone in Downtown Disney.
