Long Beach State’s track and field squad opened their season this weekend in two different states, as half the team travelled to Arizona for Mountain T’s Invitational and the other half made the trek up to Seattle for the Washington Invitational. Both invitationals are two-day competitions, but we’ve got Friday’s results for you now.
Mountain T’s (Northern Arizona’s LJ Walkup Skydome)
Freshman Destanie Yarbrough made her collegiate debut in style on Friday afternoon with a first-place finish in the weight throw open. The Fresno native recorded a mark of 45-06.25.
Senior Katie Black was the 49ers’ top finisher in the long jump open, setting her indoor personal best at 17-07.00 and finishing sixth. Junior Taylor O’Connor ranked eighth with her 17-01.25 jump, and senior Tiana Johnson had an 11th-place showing with a leap of 16-08.00. Freshmen Rebecca Hamilton (15-11.50) and Stephanie Glick (15-10.25) rounded out the group at 18th and 19th, respectively.
The men will be starting their season on Saturday morning, with the 400-meter open at 9:30 am. The women will be competing in the 800-meter open at 10:30 am.
Washington Invitational (Dempsey Indoor Facility)
Senior Kristina Wilson brought the Beach a 13th-place finish in the 5000-meter with her personal indoor best time of 17:34:33.
The women’s distance medley relay team of Carly Harris, Ejiro Okoro, Missy Barclay and Sarah Apgar clocked in with the second-best indoor mark in school history at 12:09:59. The men also had a strong showing, with Matt Maldonado, Brent Gray, Alex Freitas, and Raul Arcos finishing the relay in 10:03:68 to rank second on the 49er all-time top 10 list.
Saturday’s competition will start with the men’s 60-meter dash at 9:50 am.
