Long Beach State dodged the rain on their first match of the season, but that was the end of their good luck on Thursday night against No. 3 UCLA. The Bruins took a 6-0 lead on the way to a 13-4 win under the campus pool lights.
Long Beach State’s Kristin Stragier played well in face of strong pressure from UCLA, but the No. 3 team in the country moved out to a 4-0 lead in the first quarter behind two goals from Priscilla Orozco. UCLA added two more goals in the second period before the 49ers answered with a Kalina Houck goal with 1:38 remaining in the half.
UCLA scored four more goals in the third quarter to take a 10-1 lead. The 49ers responded by scoring three of the next four goals, capped by a Lauren Sieprath goal with 4:06 remaining. UCLA added two more late goals to finish the 13-4 tally.
Long Beach State continues the regular season this weekend, traveling to a tournament hosted by UC San Diego this weekend, where they will play matches on Friday and Saturday. Their next home match isn’t until March 18th, when they host Princeton.
