
The Long Beach State men’s golf team shot a 297 in the final round of the 63rd Annual Western Intercollegiate to improve by four spots in the final standings to finish in ninth place at the Pasatiempo Golf Club.
The 49ers recorded a 306 in the first two rounds to finish with a 54-hole total of 69-over 909.
Oregon came away with the team title with a tournament total of 25-over 865 as the Ducks finished with an eight-stroke lead over Colorado and Fresno State, and nine shots ahead of fourth place Michigan State.
Junior Michael Drake was the top player for The Beach as he recorded his best score of the tournament with a 73. Drake came in with one birdie for the day which took place on the No. 1 hole and four bogey’s on the back nine.
Fellow classman Steve Gibson also recorded his best score of the tournament with a 71 as he jumped from 63rd to tie for 37th. Gibson had four birdies in the final round.
Freshman Kevin Roy carded a 75 to tie for 37th, while Kevin Lim finished tied for 53rd with a final round score of 80.
Sophomore Ricky Montanez finished the tournament in 82nd as he scored a 78.
Diego Velasquez of Oregon State won the individual medalist by three strokes as he finished with an even 210 for the tournament.
The 49ers are back in action as they travel to the Steven Ranch Invitational hosted by the University of Colorado, Apr. 6-7, in Turlock, Calif.
