Just got a followup email from Long Beach State Crew coach Brian Counter—the three teams that qualified for the Grand Finals in the WIRA championship on Sunday placed pretty well!

The Varsity Women’s Lightweight 4 (All rowers have to be >130 pounds) finished 3rd in the conference to Cal Berkeley and Western Washington. That’s the same team that took second in the novice lightweight race last year.

The Women’s Novice Lightweight finished sixth in the race (All rowers have to be >130 pounds and in there first year of rowing).  The top three were Cal, Puget Sound University and UC Irvine.

Men Lightweight Four (All rowers have to be 160 and the average of the boat has to be under 155) finished fifth 5th. Top 3 were Cal, Sonoma State and Loyola Marymount.

All other boats were in the petite finals, which means they placed between 7th and 14th.

Congrats to these 49ers on a successful weekend—they deserve more recognition than they get, and placing so high against big-money schools is a true accomplishment.
