We really don’t mean to keep writing about golf every week, but every time we flip on the Golf Channel, there’s one of the Long Beach trifecta (Paul Goydos of Wilson and Long Beach State, John Mallinger of Long Beach State, and John Merrick of Wilson) near the top of the leaderboard.  After the first day of play at the Valero Texas Open, Goydos isn’t just near the top of the board, he’s all the way up there, after opening with a remarkable -7 on Thursday.  Justin Leonard also shot 63 to tie Goydos at the end of the day.

Mallinger is tied for 16th four strokes back at a very respectable -3, and Merrick did not enter.

For Goydos, it’s his best start to a tournament in a decade, since 1999; meanwhile, Leonard knows the territory, as he’s won Texas Open three times, and is looking to set a course record with a fourth title this year.  Goydos sunk eight birdies in the opening round, before bunkering on the 18th. “I mean, you can’t have everything good happen for every moment of your life,” Goydos told the AP.
