Yesterday we told you that Poly had landed at the top of the LA Times’ preseason football poll—now the ‘Rabbits are at it again, as they come in at the top of the official 2009 CIF Preseason Poll.
Now, we’d never doubt a local school, especially one with as storied a history as Poly, but we would definitely side with Poly coach Raul Lara in wondering what the exact basis for these high votes is. There’s a Jerry Seinfeld routine about professional sports in which he says that, because of how often players change teams, anyone who claims to be a fan of one team or another is really “Just rooting for laundry.” Given that Poly only returns four starters (and none on defense) from the last two years’ CIF-winning teams, it kind of seems like people are “voting for laundry.”
Of the ten teams on this list, nobody returns fewer players than Poly—Servite, Poly’s first opponent (this Thursday at Vet’s at 7pm!) and the second place team, returns most of their offense, and Lakewood, who comes in at seventh, returns 13. Of course, remembering 2006, and 1999, and 1996, who’s to say the Jackrabbits won’t do it again?
