Currently on a three game win streak the 49ers are back home at the Campus Pool Thursday to face the No. 8 UC Irvine Anteaters (6-2). The Beach will be looking to try to exact some revenge from their last loss to UC Irvine, 9-8, in the first round of the Norcal Tournament. On Saturday the 49ers will travel to the campus of Loyola Marymount (7-2) to face the fifth ranked Lions.
Long Beach at the NorCal Tournament: The Beach went 3-1, including two victories against ranked opponents, in last week’s NorCal Tournament, hosted by Stanford University in Palo Alto, California. The 49ers split on the first day of the tournament, losing to No. 8 UC Irvine before defeating Pomona-Pitzer in the second game. On day two the 49ers defeated No.17 UC San Diego and No. 12 Santa Clara. The Beach took care of UC San Diego with a high-scoring victory of 11-7, and held on to defeat Santa Clara later in the day by a score of 9-8 in overtime. Jeff Greenwood amassed 11 goals in the two day tournament to lead the 49ers while goalie Derek Wiebe-Bailey recorded 34 saves in the tournament.
On a roll: With their three impressive wins in the NorCal Tournament, Long Beach is in the midst of their first three game win streak since the 2007 season.
Scouting UC Irvine and LMU: No. 8 UC Irvine (6-2) finished 2-2 in the Norcal Tournament. The Anteaters lost to top-ranked USC and No. 5 Loyola Marymount while beating the 49ers and Pepperdine. The 49ers will look to shut down the Anteaters Cole Bielskis who in the last game scored four goals against The Beach. LMU went 3-1 in the Norcal Tournament beating UC Irvine, UC Santa Barbara and UC San Diego. LMU has only lost to top-ranked USC and No. 4 UCLA. The Beach will be going against LMU All-American goalie Andy Stevens in a match-up of two of the top goalies in the country.
This week: Play starts for the 49ers Thursday against UC Irvine at the Campus Pool at 7 p.m. PT. The Niners then head to the campus of Loyola Marymount Saturday to face the Lions at 12:00 p.m. PT.
