The Lakewood Lancers haven’t gotten the game they’ve been looking for all preseason—a game where they don’t play down to their opponents’ level, where they can bank some confidence. Friday night against an overmatched Verbum Dei team, they got what they needed in a 51-0 win.
Truthfully, it wasn’t even that close, as the score was 42-0 at halftime and QB Jesse Scroggins, who had four TDs in the first half, didn’t even play a snap in the second. The three-headed monster in the backfield churned out 255 yards rushing (130 yards and three TDs coming from Ally Long).
“It was a game where we put all three phases of the game together,” said Lakewood coach Thadd MacNeal. “We were solid on special teams, we got the shutout on defense, and Jesse didn’t play in the second half.” The Lancers host Compton next Friday at 7pm in their league opener.
