When you’re down 3-1, a 3-3 tie looks pretty appealing—and that’s what the Vikes got against El Camino College on Tuesday, earning a draw in the South Coast Conference game.

Trailing 3-1, freshman forward Roberto Tapia scored the first of his two goals in the 68th minute and put in the equalizer in the 90th minute to erase what would have been a LBCC defeat.

The Vikings (6-6-3, 3-3-3 SCC) appeared to be well on their way to an easy win after needing just three minutes to score the game’s first goal.  Tapia fed sophomore forward Albert Jimenez for a breakaway goal to give LBCC the quick 1-0 lead.

But in a matter of a little over a minute, El Camino erased that advantage and went ahead on its own.

Tony Sandoval’s shot from 25 yards out in the 28th minute found the back of the net for El Camino and then in the 29th minute, he came right back to score on a corner kick to put the Warriors up 2-1 at halftime.

Carlos Ruiz added a crucial goal in the 64th minute for El Camino (5-8-2, 2-4-2 SCC) to give them a commanding 3-1 lead that eventual would crumble.

Tapia closed the game with two goals and an assist. Jimenez posted one goal and an assist, and sophomore midfielder Daniel Vasquez was credited with the assist on the game’s final score.

Freshman Luis Romero totaled five assists in goal for the Vikings, while Christian Jornsved made just one save for the Warriors.

Long Beach returns to action on Friday (Oct 30) when it hosts Los Angeles Harbor College in a 4 pm SCC game.
