The Long Beach City College women’s basketball team opened up the 2009-10 season on Friday night with a 64-44 non-conference win over visiting Rio Hondo College at the Hall of Champions Gym.
The game was close over the first 10 minutes as LBCC held just a one point lead (15-14) at the 10:16 mark. But the Vikings went on to outscore Rio Hondo 12-5 over the next five minutes to take a commanding 27-17 advantage with 5:50 left in the first half that they wouldn’t give up.
Four Vikings scored in double figures on the night. Freshman forward Rayven Sellers had an impressive debut for LBCC as she totaled a double-double with game highs of 21 points and 13 rebounds. She also added four assists and two steals.
Sophomore Alanna Yim (11 points, 7 rebounds), and freshmen Maria Loera (10 points, 9 rebounds), and Jocelyn Arce (10 points, 5 rebounds, 4 assists) all had good opening nights for the Vikings.
Forward Reina Sosa led Rio Hondo (0-1) with 16 points and 11 rebounds. Amber Gonzalez also chipped in with 10 points.
Long Beach returns to action next weekend (Nov. 13-15) when it will compete at the Santa Barbara City College tournament.
