It certainly wasn’t pretty on either end of the court, but after 32 minutes and 53 whistled fouls, Poly ended up with a 56-36 win over Jordan, in which they held the Panthers’ top two scorers without a field goal, and allowed just seven field goals overall.
The Rabbits got out to a fast start, going up 11-1, and taking a 26-10 lead into halftime, having allowed just one field goal to that point. “I think after we got that lead, we got a little complacent,” said Poly coach Carl Buggs. In a sloppy third quarter that saw 16 fouls called, Jordan put another nine points on the board, as Poly pushed their lead to 42-19.
The Rabbits’ biggest advantage was inside, where they got a lot of points, and also shut down Jordan. “They were bigger inside, and they took it to us there,” said Jordan coach Adara Newidouski, who had three of her bigs foul out of the game. “A lot of the errors were unforced, and our fault—we were 19-34 from the free throw line.”
Poly got big contributions from a deep bench, always a goal of Buggs’ in league contests. Destiny King helped pound the ball inside, leading her team with 9 points, while Taijhe Kelly came off the bench to score eight straight in the third. Sheila Boykin had five points and five boards, and Ashley Wilson had six boards. Leaders for Jordan were India Burke, the fearless point guard, who had 12 points, and Ashlee Carswell had nine.
Poly visits Cabrillo, while Jordan will travel to Wilson next on Wednesday.
