10:00pm |  The Poly wrestling team won its first six matches and took a 31-0 lead over visiting Wilson on the way to a 47-21 win to claim at least third place in the Moore League.

Poly had five brother’s go 5-0 and earn 24 team points as Oscar (103 pounds), Sergio (135) and 160-pound Jesus Preciado all won matches as did Rickie (125) and Richie Touch (130).

The decisive victory has some wondering if Thursday’s showdown with Millikan at Poly will be more competitive than most expect.

“We really just want to come out and give Millikan all we have and if they beat us, at least we left it all out on the mat,” Poly coach Bart Roper said. “I couldn’t be more proud of my kids tonight for battling to the end and winning in a much more convincing fashion than even I expected.”

Freshman Oscar Preciado (103) got Poly off to a 6-0 team lead when he pinned Wilson’s Nicole Guardarzian.  Alex Oul then pinned Garret Petersen (112) and Jimmy Sammon (119) won a 12-0 major decision over Wilson’s Austin Urtz to give the Jackrabbits a 16-0 team lead.

Rickie Touch (125) pinned Adam Lemus at 5:26 and Richie Touch (130) won a tough 4-3 decision over the Bruins’ Leo Leao.  Sergio Preciado’s (135) pin of Dylan Bent at 3:20 gave Poly its 31-0 lead.

Tyler Whitfill (140) pinned Poly’s Alfredo Alcala at just 1:19 into the match to give the Bruins their first victory of the evening.Poly’s Michael Middlebrooks (140) was able to win a major decision (13-2) over Bradley Burgess, before Wilson’s Nick Hrebien (152) pinned the Jackrabbits’ Michael Williams at 4:42 to pull the Bruins to within 35-12.

But the showcase match of the night was Wilson’s 160-pound and Troy Classic champion vs. Poly’s best, Jesus Preciado, who bumped up to 160 to take on Newman.

After a 4-4 tied midway through the match, Preciado was able to take control and win a 12-6 decision over the rising Newman.

“It was close and then I think I was just a little more crisp on my takedowns tonight,” Jesus Preciado said. “I was pretty good on my feet and was glad to be able to pick up the win.”

Jesus Preciado improved to 13-0 after rehabilitating an injury and along with Warren High’s Damien Gomez (103) are the Long Beach-area’s only undefeated wrestlers.

The Moore League’s best 171-pounder thus far, Wilson’s Miguel Peralta, remained unbeaten in league action.  The senior pinned David Cropp at 2:09 to get Wilson as close as they’d get on Tuesday, 38-18.

Poly’s Charlie Song (189) pinned Demetrius Torres at 4:50 and was followed by an 8-2 decision victory for Wilson’s Ignacio Mundo at 215 pounds.  Poly’s Taga Loa (heavyweight) rallied late to win a 5-4 decision over Wilson’s Oscar Ronquello to close out the night.

“We expected to be more competitive tonight, but our kids battled hard and stayed in the match all night,” Wilson coach Seth Wegter said. “We’re going to work hard to get ready for Lakewood on Thursday, but I was really happy with Tyler Whitfill, Nick Hrebien, Miguel Peralta and Ignacio Mundo for fighting tonight.”
