Compton, the no. 7 team in the boys’ basketball CIF Division 2 bracket, has been on a tear this postseason, with CIF playoff opponents not having the necessary time to scout and prepare for the Dynamic Trio of Allan Guei, Cliff Sims and Anthony January. Tonight, they host no. 11 seed Burbank in the semifinals at Dominguez High, at 7pm.
The Burbank Bulldogs are 23-7, and already have some upsets under the belt this bracket (as do the Tarbabes, who knocked off no. 2 Edison in the quarters). In their first CIF semifinal in 43 years, the Bulldogs have a few scorers, and perhaps more importantly, the height to jump with Compton, if not necessarily the athleticism to run with them all game.
Argin Gerigorian scored 19 points in Burbank’s last playoff win; the six-foot guard is the straw that stirs the drink for the Bulldogs. Inside, the Tarbabes will have to compete with 6’5″ junior Adam Colman, a lanky post player (he’s listed at just 185 pounds) who scored 15 in the Bulldogs’ last game.
If Compton can pull it off—and they do go in as the favorites, in terms of seeding and ability—the Tarbabes will have earned their way into the Division 2 championship game. Stay tuned!
