Senior captain Trevor Kellogg was given the Opening Day start for the Jackrabbits, and gave up seven runs to Torrance, unable to make it out of the second inning. With that bad taste brewing in his mouth he took the mound against North High in Torrance on Thursday, and scattered four hits and two walks over 5 1/3 innings to get his first win (1-1), as Poly took it 6-2.
After surrendering two runs in the sixth inning, fellow senior right-hander Bryan Sanchez got out of a jam and recorded the last five outs of the game. Sophomore first baseman Jeff Turley crushed a solo homer to right in the first inning and the Jackrabbits never looked back. Turley added a double and two walks, while senior shortstop Eric Gonzalez doubled in two runs in the sixth inning. Poly is now 2-2 for the season, and will host Downey High School for a doubleheader next Tuesday at Blair Field.
