Still in the thick of it over here, with a few last basketball polls to review, as well as the full swing of Spring sports—before somebody says we’re ignoring a sport, please keep in mind there are no ranked Long Beach teams in boys’ volleyball or softball (Lakewood had been ranked at no. 7 for softball but fell out this week).
Girls’ Basketball
We might as well rename this the Poly section, since the Rabbits’ season…somehow…is still stretching on, with one more game to go this Saturday. They’re still up near the top in a number of national polls, having moved up a spot in a few of them, since Mater Dei defeated Brea at USC on Saturday. They’re up to no. 3 in the nation in the MaxPreps poll, no. 5 in the ESPN poll, and steady at no. 5 in the USA poll (although that won’t change to reflect Saturday’s results until Wednesday).
Baseball
Thanks to MaxPreps bumping Lakewood up to no. 1 in the nation, the Lancers are getting plenty of attention nationwide. The 10-0 start probably doesn’t hurt either. They’ll be included in next week’s USA and ESPN rankings, and they’re now the top team in the LA Times rankings. They’re also sitting on top of the CIF Division 1 rankings, where they’re backed up locally by Wilson at no. 9. The Bruins are up to no. 37 in the section on Maxpreps, while Poly is at 153 and Millikan is 163.
Boys’ Tennis
The Moore League is holding down the center of the Division 3 poll, with Poly, Lakewood, and Wilson all placed together at fifth, sixth, and seventh respectively.
