It was a great day of basketball at Jordan, as Stanford came away with the Division 1 city championship, while Tincher took the Division 2 crown.

Division I Championship: Stanford 40, Hoover 38

The Division I Finals had the look of a prize fight as undefeated Northern League Champion Hoover took on undefeated Southern League Champion Stanford.  The lead changed hands several times with the Hawks clinging to a 20-19 Halftime lead.  The second half was no different, as the fans got their “money’s worth” as Stanford held a 40-38 lead with just seconds remaining in the game.  Hoover had one last opportunity and was able to get off a 3-pointer as time expired….that hit the rim…. ricocheted off the backboard….hit the rim again….and fell out!  Leading scorer for the Hawks was Sean Lopez (10 pts.); Leading scorer for the Highlanders was Jaylen Massengill (12 pts. ) & Kevin Walker (10 pts.)

Division II Championship: Tincher 51, Gompers 38

The Division II match up, Tincher & Gompers, made it an “all-Eastern” Final coming off a pair of exciting wins over Western League rivals Colin Powell and Lindsey.  Gompers’ only loss of the season came at the hands of Tincher earlier in the year and it appeared that the Gators might get revenge early in the game.  However, the Tigers made good on their Eastern League Title and pulled away in the 2nd half to win it, 51-38.   Cory Cummings (16 pts.) led the way for the Tigers while Gompers’ Julio Casillas also poured in 16 points.  This now makes back to back Division II City Titles for the Tincher boys.  Gompers’ outstanding effort is to be commended as they have only been in Division II competition for 3 years.
