Long Beach State managed six hits over nine innings against Waves starter Kevin Inman, but Inman kept the Dirtbags off the board in a 4-0 loss Wednesday at Pepperdine. Brennan Metzger had two hits, including a double to lead Long Beach State.
Long Beach State had their best chance to get on the board in the first inning, after Metzger led off the game and was sacrificed over to second. Joey Terdoslavich singled to right field, but a strong throw by Waves right-fielder Ryan Van Amberg caught Meztger at the plate, and the Dirtbags were held scoreless.
The Waves controlled the action from there. With two outs in the third inning and one out, Van Amberg singled home the first run of the game, and after the Waves loaded the bases, starter Troy Watson walked home a second run. That was followed by another bases-loaded walk from Josh Corrales as the Dirtbags fell behind 3-0.
Pepperdine’s Ryan Heroy led off the fourth inning with a solo home run off of Corrales, but the sophomore settled down from there to get through the inning, and the Dirtbags bullpen allowed only one hit over the next four innings as the game stayed at a 4-0 score.
However, Inman was in control throughout. Making his first start of the season, Inman saw only three batters reach third base on the day, and scattered six Dirtbag hits over nine innings, closing out the game for the fourth complete game shutout of the year for Pepperdine, and the first of the season for Inman.
The Dirtbags continue with non-conference play this weekend, hosting Stanford for a three-game series at Blair Field. The series begins on Friday, with first pitch scheduled for 6:30 p.m.
