The Long Beach State women’s basketball team was unable to contain a hot-shooting University of Oregon team as the 49ers fell to the Ducks, 102-70, in front of 1,860 at McArthur Court on Sunday afternoon.
Oregon (8-1) shot 52.8 percent from the field, while holding The Beach to 39.7 percent. UO also took advantage of LBSU’s miscues, scoring 33 points off of 28 49er turnovers.
Senior Lauren Sims led Long Beach State with 20 points, going 4-for-9 from beyond the arc. Senior Ally Wade finished with 15 points and a team-high seven rebounds, while classmate Karina Figueroa chipped in 10 points.
The Beach (3-5) got on the board first with a pair of free throws from Sims, but Oregon quickly went up 10-4 after a layup by Amanda Johnson. The 49ers pulled within two after baskets by junior LaTorya Barbee and Figueroa, but that was the closest The Beach would get as the Ducks went on a 15-2 run to go up, 25-10.
Figueroa eventually ended a 3 minute and 37 second scoring drought for LBSU with a 3-pointer, but UO would stay in control for the remainder of the half, taking a 52-28 lead into the break.
It looked like the 49ers were going to make a comeback in the second period, scoring the first seven points to cut the deficit to 52-35, but the Ducks hit a 3-pointer at the 16:56 mark and continued to cruise to a 102-70 victory.
Micaela Cocks led Oregon with 27 points on an 8-for-9 shooting performance, including a perfect 5-of-5 from 3-point range. Taylor Lilley had 25 points and seven assists, while Amanda Johnson added 11 points and nine rebounds.
Long Beach State returns to action on Friday, Dec. 11, when it heads to San Diego State for a 7 p.m. showdown with the Aztecs. The 49ers will then make their way to the University of San Diego for its final non-conference road game on Sunday (Dec. 13).
