
While the November weather is getting blustery and chilly here in Long Beach, the 49er golf team is in Hawaii, soaking up the rays and playing good team golf in their final tournament of the season. After one round of play at the Turtle Bay Intercollegiate (at U of H), LBSU posted a two-over 290 to finish in 11th place. SDSU leads the 19-team field with an 11-under 277, taking a three-shot lead into tomorrow.
Individually, junior Michael Drake was the top player for the 49ers as he fired a three-under 69 to finish tied for eighth place. Just one shot behind was fellow junior Steve Gibson as he shot a two-under 70 to tie for 13th. Coming in third, freshman Austin Love tied for 45th with a one-over 73, followed by freshman Kevin Lim tied for 96th with a six-over 78. Sophomore Ricky Montanez carded a nine-over 81 as he tied for 103rd.
Playing as individuals for The Beach, freshman Kevin Roy tied for 13th as he carded a two-under 70, followed by sophomore Issei Suenega tied for 99th with a seven-over 79. Adam Wennerstrom of Texas and Andrew Cooley of San Diego State are tied for first place as both players shot a six-under 66, with a one-stroke lead over three players tied for third.
Round two continues tomorrow at 7:30 a.m. Hawaii time, with final round action concluding on Wednesday.
