A woman and child were extricated from a crumpled car that struck a tree in Long Beach this afternoon and are in stable condition, authorities said. 

The woman, believed to be about 50 years old, was driving a Honda Accord that crashed into a tree while traveling northbound on Magnolia Avenue, just north of 25th Street, at about 1:50 p.m., said Long Beach Fire Department (LBFD) Public Information Officer Jake Heflin.

The woman and the 3-year-old girl, who was strapped into a child seat in the back seat, were taken to a hospital for evaluation and treatment, Heflin said.

The woman was in stable condition and the child was stable with no obvious signs of injury, but was transported to a local hospital for evaluation as a precaution, Long Beach Police Department (LBPD) spokewoman Megan Zabel said.

Firefighters cut the roof from the sedan to access the patients, Heflin said.

The car’s steering wheel and curtain airbags deployed and there was “significant passenger space intrusion on the driver’s side,” he said.

He said the crash “shows the importance of utilizing the proper passenger restraint system for children.”
