A woman riding a skateboard in Central Long Beach late Saturday night was struck by a motorist and hospitalized in critical condition, authorities said.

Police responded to the incident at about 10:25 p.m. near the intersection of Pacific Coast Highway and Lewis Avenue, one block east of Poly High School.

Arriving police found the woman in the roadway with life-threatening injuries to her upper and lower body, said Long Beach Police Department spokeswoman Shaunna Dandoy.

The victim was transported by Long Beach paramedics to a local hospital in critical condition.

A preliminary investigation found that the victim was riding a skateboard south across PCH when she was struck by the motorist traveling east on PCH, according to Dandoy.

The driver of the vehicle remained at the scene and cooperated with the investigation, Dandoy said. Drugs or alcohol do not appear to be a factor in the incident at this time, she said.

The investigation is ongoing. No other information is available at this time.
