Using what the Long Beach Police Department (LBPD) called an “unknown technology,” a set of three suspects used a device that allowed them keyless entrance into eight vehicles in a single night.

“This is a situation where technology is working against us, making our job much more challenging at a time where resources are already strained,” stated Long Beach Police Chief Jim McDonnell in a press release. “Just as law enforcement tactics evolve, so does the criminal element’s and we need the community’s involvement more so than ever.”

Throughout the early morning hours of February 26, the suspects burglarized eight East Long Beach vehicles without any clear indication of what make or type of vehicle they can access. LBPD fears that the burglaries will go unnoticed or unreported since victims might think they either lost the items themselves or opened themselves up to the burglary by leaving their car open.

According to the release, the LBPD’s Auto Theft Detail has been working with domestic and international law enforcement agencies–along with vehicle manufacturers–in an attempt to somehow identify or figure out the technology being used by the burglars.

Anyone with information regarding the identity of the suspects depicted in the video or the burglaries is urged to contact LBPD Auto Theft Detective Joseph Starbird at 562-570-7362.
