9:15pm | A woman toting a bag of molotov cocktails was arrested earlier this month after a Long Beach police officer witnessed her lighting one and throwing it, according to the Long Beach Fire Department.
The patrol officer witnessed Ardath Marie Scott igniting and throwing the destructive device at the intersection of Pacific Coast Highway and Henderson Avenue just after midnight on July 6, according to information provided by Firefighter Steve Yamamoto, a fire department spokesman.
The officer immediately placed Scott under arrest, at which time he identified five additional molotov cocktails in a bag she was carrying, Yamamoto said.Scott has been charged with four felony counts, including the use of a destructive device and attempted arson. As of Friday she was being held in lieu of $1 million bail.
Yamamoto said that no one was injured and no property was damaged as a result of the incident.
“Thanks to the efforts of the Long Beach Fire and Police Department, the extremely dangerous acts of this individual were halted before anyone was seriously injured or property was destroyed,” he said.
“Molotov cocktail” is a generic name used to describe a variety of improvised incendiary devices. Such a weapon generally consists of a breakable bottle filled with gasoline or another combustible liquid and a wick of some sort, typically a rag soaked in alcohol or kerosene, that serves as the ignition source and is held in place by the bottle stopper.
