2:15pm | In a special election to replace the late Jenny Oropeza, former Assemblymember Ted Lieu (D) won a majority with 57.14-percent of the vote over seven other challengers in the race for Oropeza’s 28th District seat in the California State Senate.

Oropeza passed away in October 2010 and won re-election just a few weeks later. The 28th District runs as far north as Venice, including several beachside cities along the Pacific Ocean coast and including portions of west and downtown Long Beach.

Republican Bob Valentine received the second-most votes with 25.11-percent, and Republican Martha F. Gibson placed third with 6.71-percent. Five others each received fewer than 3.5-percent of the vote.

Lieu is a former State Assemblymember who served the 53rd District from 2005 until November 2010. He is also a former lawyer and JAG Corps prosecutor in the U.S. Air Force.
