In a bit of sad news, the Press-Telegram reported that a well-known area cyclist was killed yesterday when he was struck by a truck that was headed to the Port of Long Beach but took a wrong turn. The cyclist, Gustavo Ramirez, collided with the big rig at Shoreline Drive and Shoreline Village Drive and died at the scene.
Ramirez was a close friend and adopted family-member of former Long Beach City Councilmember Rob Webb, and often cycled around Long Beach and sometimes even to his job in Manhattan Beach.
From the unattributed article:
Ramirez was part of the family of former Councilman Rob Webb. The bicyclist made regular rides on the bicycle to the Queen Mary from Ramirez’s residence in Belmont Shore, Webb said Tuesday night.
A tragic end to what seemed like a hobby that brought Gustavo much joy. Downtown Long Beach is a wonderfully scenic place to ride, and the city has gone the extra mile recently to reach a friendly hand out to cyclists, but with speedy traffic and the threat of large trucks searching for the Port, the streets can be a very dangerous place. Be safe out there.
