The Port of Long Beach recently awarded nearly $60,000 in scholarships to eight local high school students and 21 college students to help them pursue careers in international trade and goods movement.

The total amount awarded — $59,500 — represents the largest sum of scholarship money the Port has given in a single year. With this year’s awards, the Port has granted $447,650 in scholarships to 272 students since 1993, with the goal ultimately being to help students prepare for future careers and leadership positions in the international trade business community.

The scholarships were formally announced during an awards luncheon organized by the International Business Association of Southern California of the Long Beach Area Chamber of Commerce last week.

Scholarships were awarded in six categories:

Long Beach Unified School District Scholars: Yonatan T. Berihun, Arren D. Bustamante, Manuela Colonia, James K. Draper, Yesica Garcia, Tarah Alise Marshall, Leang-Kheng Ouk, Rouzbeh Rahai.

California State University, Long Beach, International Business Scholarships: Aaron Edmiston, Jose Espeleta, David Iskander, Eunchong Lee, Min Joo Lee, Sota Sunleng, Nicholas Townsend, Nhi Kathy Ngoc Tran.

Woodrow Wilson Memorial Scholarships for students in the Long Beach City College International Business Program: Jennifer Amaya, Leah Burten, Johnny Kirpalani, Jill Mawson.

Long Beach City College School of Trade and Industrial Technologies: Walter E. Davis, Emilia Joya, Freddy A. Osorio, Sisophath T. Thou.

Global Logistics Specialist program at California State University, Long Beach: Anthony Brockington, Andrew K. Eddy.

Masters of Arts in the Global Logistics program at California State University, Long Beach: Stacey Kelso, Tongli “David” Sun, Lindsay D. Tullis.
