Long Beach City Councilmember Dee Andrews will be running for a third term, his team announced today.

According to a release issued Friday afternoon, Andrews is just the fourth city councilmember to seek a third term since 1992. The Long Beach City Charter dictates third-term candidates can run, but must campaign as write-in candidates in the primary election before advancing to the General Election, where their name may appear on the ballot.

“I’m proud of my record, working to improve and protect Sixth District neighborhoods, but there is much work that still needs to be done and there are projects I want to see through to completion,” said Andrews. “After a lifetime in central Long Beach, I think voters have a pretty good idea of who I am, what I stand for, and what they can count on me to fight for.Today, I will begin what is likely to be my final political campaign, by asking voters to write my name in to allow me the honor of continuing to represent them at City Hall.”

An event hosted by Andrews tonight at La Lune Imperial Restaurant from 6:30PM to 8:00PM will kick off his campaign.

Andrews was elected to the city council in a 2007 Special Election and was re-elected in 2008 and 2012. He ran unopposed in 2012.

He has been a resident of Long Beach for over 60 years, taught Black History and Government at Long Beach Polytechnic and Wilson High Schools, and now works as a substitute teacher at Cabrillo High School.

According to the release, his athletic career at Poly High School, Long Beach City College (LBCC) and Long Beach State University (LBSU) earned him an All-American High School Football and Track honor and a spot in the LBCC and LBSU Athletic Halls of Fame. He holds a degree in Social Science and Physical Education from California State University, Long Beach.

Dee Andrews’ campaign kickoff event will be held Friday, May 22 from 6:30 PM – 8:00 PM at La Lune Imperial Restaurant, located at 1438 Atlantic Ave.
