The Long Beach Police Department’s training academy could be getting significant upgrades after the Planning Commission approved a proposal on Thursday for renovations and new construction at its El Dorado Park campus.
Four of the five masonry buildings that were built in the 1940s could get their windows and roofs replaced in addition to new electrical, lighting, data and mechanical systems through the project. Other improvements to the buildings will address compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act for the facility’s restrooms and other paths of travel.
Under the approved plans, a group of trailers that was installed in the 1990s to be used as classrooms and locker rooms for cadets is slated be replaced with a 4,200-square-foot permanent locker room building and over 13,500 feet of modular classrooms that will be fixed to a foundation.

The parking lot of the facility will be reconfigured to include 48 parking spaces, as well as new landscaping and a possible memorial space for police dogs and others who have served, according to the plans.
Overall, the academy is expected to become more energy efficient, thanks to new windows and air conditioning systems and the installation of solar panels on some buildings.
The Long Beach City Council approved an infrastructure plan included in this year’s budget that allocated $13. 7 million for improvements to the department’s academy campus.
