To get the 218 votes she needed to surrender in Iraq by telling our enemies when we would pull out House Speaker Nancy Pelosi told fence sitters in her own party, did they want a headline saying, “Congress is standing up to President Bush,” or “Congress gives President Bush free rein?” (New York Times subscription required).  So more important to Pelosi than actually getting troops out of Iraq was what the headlines would say.

There have been plenty of mistakes in the war in Iraq, primarily among them in my opinion is too few troops and not stationing significant troops on Iraq’s borders with Syria and Iran to keep out the weapons and terrorists crossing into Iraq to foment civil war and kill Americans.  But in my opinion the biggest mistake made has been the politicization of the war by the Democrats and their friends in the media at Time/Warner, the Tribune Company, the New York Times, and the major networks.  Once a decent “cooling off” period passed it became evident they cared less about American safety and security and helping our troops combat terrorists than making President Bush look bad.

If there was every any doubt about this Ms. Pelosi removed all doubt in her argument to garner the bare minimum votes she needed for her surrender bill today: what kind of headlines do you want?  Politics does not get more disgusting than that, trading in American troops for fifteen point bold on the front page above the fold of the New York Times.
