A 65-year-old man was killed when he was struck by a vehicle as he crossed a Long Beach street and the driver fled the scene, authorities said today.
The crash occurred at about 7:51 p.m. Sunday, when the pedestrian crossed the street on the corner of Willow Street and Myrtle Avenue, near Sunnyside Cemetery on the border of Long Beach and Signal Hill.
Police said a red sedan traveling eastbound on Willow Street struck the pedestrian as he was walking southbound in an unmarked crosswalk at Myrtle Avenue.
“The red sedan fled the scene and did not return,” police said.
Long Beach Fire Department responded and transported the victim to a local hospital, where he died.
The name of the man killed is being withheld pending notification of next of kin, police said.
Police said it is unknown if alcohol, drugs or speed were a factor. No other details were immediately available.
