A virtual workshop exploring non-traditional STEM careers geared toward girls will be organized this Thursday by the Long Beach based organization DemoChicks.

The free event will include breakout sessions according to grade level (pre-K-5, middle school, high school) so speakers can give specific career advice on a personal level. Participants will also go through a career exploration activity during which they answer 30 questions and be given about 100 career options.

“Our mission is to make them (girls) aware by providing hands-on activities for the girls to explore these various disciplines,” said Robin Thorne, one of the workshop speakers and founder of DemoChicks.

Thorne, a chemical engineer and owner of a construction and demolition firm, CTI Environmental in Long Beach, created Demo Chicks to enlighten girls about non-traditional careers and empower women currently in them.

Thorne previously told the Post that she was inspired to create DemoChicks after completing a demolition project where general labor workers were making $42 an hour.

Participants will learn about career opportunities in construction, engineering and demolition.

The workshop will take place Aug. 27 from 3 to 4 p.m. on Zoom. Once registered, participants will receive a Zoom link the day before the event. Click here to register.
