Even for the most determined students, the process of applying for acceptance to college can be daunting.  Essays, forms, financial aid – how to make sense of it all?

This weekend, the California State University system is offering free assistance to students and parents at the Super Saturday College Fair this Saturday, August 29.  The event will be held from 8:30am-2:00pm at Cal State Dominguez Hills in Carson.

Parents and students will have a chance to attend workshops with university professors and representatives, giving them the opportunity to go straight to the source.  Who better to make sense of those confusing applications than the people who designed them?  The workshops include:

  • How to Prepare for College: The Importance of Math
  • The Freshman Success – How to Get Off to a Great College Start
  • Educational Tools and Resources for Parents

“The benefit of the Super Saturday College Fair is that it brings parents and students together to learn how to navigate the process of obtaining higher education,” said Dr. Barbara Young, CSU African American Initiative consultant, in a press release.

Super Saturday is part of the CSU African American Initiative, which partners with local churches and other community groups to encourage young African Americans to pursue higher education (though the event is open to everyone).  Long Beach has its own way of leading young students to college – a perfect supplement to programs like the AAI – called the College Promise, which guarantees admittance at LBCC or CSULB to Long Beach students who meet all of the necessary qualifications.

More information, including a complete list of workshops and directions is available on the CSU Super Saturday website at calstate.edu/supersaturday.
