A motorcyclist died Friday evening after crashing into a vehicle at a high speed in North Long Beach, authorities said.

The wreck happened on Long Beach Boulevard near Ellis Street around 6:57 p.m., according to the Long Beach Police Department.

Police say the motorcyclist was riding a 2014 Kawasaki northbound at a high rate of speed when he crashed into a 2014 GMC vehicle that was headed southbound on Long Beach Boulevard before turning left in front of the motorcyclist.

The collision launched the motorcyclist from his bike, police said, and the motorcycle continued sliding northbound, striking a parked unoccupied truck in a parking lot on the east side of the street.

The motorcyclist, who suffered significant injuries to his lower body, died at the scene, police said.

The Los Angeles County Medical Examiner-Coroner’s Office identified the motorcyclist as 57-year-old John Stanley Blackwell.

The driver of the 2014 GMC remained on the scene and cooperated with officers during their investigation, according to police, who said he was not believed to have been distracted or driving under the influence at the time of the crash.

Police ask anyone who witnessed the crash to contact detectives at 562-570-7355.
