A man died Monday morning when he crashed into an overpass pillar near the Hotel Maya, according to authorities.

Police say the man was speeding southbound on Harbor Scenic Drive at Queens Highway in a 2020 Kia Optima just before 8 a.m. when he struck a center median curb and then crashed head-on into the overpass pillar.

When officers arrived, they found the man and rendered aid to him until Long Beach Fire Department personnel arrived at the scene and pronounced him dead, police said. The man’s identity was not immediately released as the Los Angeles Medical Examiner’s Office works to notify his relatives, police said. No other injuries were reported.

At this time, police say speed and impaired driving may have played a role in the crash. The investigation is ongoing, the LBPD said.
